How to Check your Hardware Details in Fedora 11

lshw (Hardware Lister) is a small tool to provide detailed information about all hardware in your system.

To install lshw, type this command:

yum -y install lshw lshw-gui

By default lshw command generates a long lists of information about your hardware and you don't even need some of its information. To generate a compact report use "-short" option.

lshw -short

This will give you summarize information about your hardware devices as shown below:

Ubuntu 9.04 on my HP Pavilion dv5-1153ei Notebook

I am very disappointed in Ubuntu 9.04 performance on my laptop. I had Ubuntu 9.04 installed in my HP Pavillion dv5-115ei laptop with the following specs:

  • 2GHZ Intel Core 2 Dou processor T5800
  • 2GB RAM
  • 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT video card

How to find the fastest CentOS/Fedora mirrors

To speed-up your yum download, you need to install the yum-fastestmirror package. Its a yum plugin which chooses fastest repository from a mirrorlist. This plugin sorts each repository's mirrorlist by connection speed prior to downloading packages.

To install, simply type:

yum install yum-fastestmirror
