Ubuntu 9.04 on my HP Pavilion dv5-1153ei Notebook

I am very disappointed in Ubuntu 9.04 performance on my laptop. I had Ubuntu 9.04 installed in my HP Pavillion dv5-115ei laptop with the following specs:

  • 2GHZ Intel Core 2 Dou processor T5800
  • 2GB RAM
  • 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT video card
Ubuntu GDM

For some reason its running slower than the previous version of Ubuntu (Ubuntu 8.10) that I am using before. Its becomes completely unresponsive if I am using multiple applications at the same time especially when I am running firefox. Running firefox is very frustrating, it freezes every 5 minutes or so, scroll on any windows takes time. If I've minimized anything for some time, it takes forever for it to reappear.

My CPU usage is not unusually high, and I am using less than 50% of my 2 GB of RAM. Also during the shutdown process, the screen gets white and the laptop does not shutdown at all.

Ubuntu Error

I don't think its a hardware issue but something is wrong with this version of Ubuntu. I already tried google for possible solutions for this problem but with no luck. Right now I am planning to downgrade to the previous version of Ubuntu or just simply give Fedora a shot.

Just a quick reply to this topic. I have just installed the latest ubuntu release 9.10. I have the same laptop dv5-1153ei, and ubuntu doesn't stall like mentioned in the topic. I've used it with the following applications,
Firefox, crossover (MS Excel, MS Word, MS Powerpoint, Navicat, Dreamweaver), Movie Player, MacLin Themes, 3d Desktop, PS3 Media Server etc.. It all works well, of course like any operating system had a few application crash but nothing that required a reboot. So i don't know if the problem was with ubuntu 9.04 but 9.10 worked for me.

Just to reply to this, i have just installed ubuntu 9.10 on the exact same laptop, and it's working fine. Tried firefox, crossover (MS Excel, MS Word, MS Powerpoint, Navicat, Dreamweaver 8), media players, burning cd, mac lin themes, gnome-menu, 3d desktop, ps3 media server etc.. and they are all working fine. Did experience a few application crash but nothing that required a reboot. So i would recommend using ubuntu.
